Adult research

As I have said before, and as this article over at Science News says, there is definitely a need for more research on interventions for adults with autism. The article is entitled “Adults with Autism are Left to Navigate a Jarring World” by Siri Carpenter. Check it out when you have a chance.

Okay, so this article on hoarding hits a little close to home

Just recently my daughter has been working to get me to clean the house so she can bring friends over. So when I read this article, “Autism & Hoarding: Adult Son Fears Parent’s Help with Overflowing Room” by Micah Mazurek over at Autism Speaks website, it hit a little close to home.

I know my son does the same thing and as the article says “classic examples include bits of string, pieces of metal or paper scraps”.  I need to get better at cleaning, as well as not hoarding, and not just for my sake but my kids as well.

Been there, done that

For any parent whose has a child with a (dis)ability, what these parents share is familiar on some level. While it’s a short film, these are also feelings that are perhaps best dealt with in small doses.

You can read about the short film documentary in the article entitled “Oscar Contender Depicts Parents Coping with Son’s Diagnosis” by Shaun Heasley over at Disability Scoop. Bravo Tomasz and Magda. It’s a job well done.

Rain Reign

So it turns out my daughter was interested in reading this book , I just didn’t know it. The book is entitled  by Rain Reign by Ann Martin, the author of a famous series of books that I’m familiar with from my Waldenbooks days, The Baby-Sitters Club.  You can check out a review on the book over at the New York Times entitled “Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin” by Ron Suskind, the author of “Life, Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes and Autism,” another great book.

AA or autism app

Now this is what I want to do, create some sort of app that will help my son and others with autism. Check out the article entitled “Doctor Creates Social App for People with Autism” over at the Autism Daily Newscast.Very cool!

I have to admit I’ve been reading a few books on app development lately and I’ve even downloaded a program to invent apps. Maybe the next article I post will be about an app I’ve invented?

Books about disabilities

I must say that as soon as I saw these award winning books about kids with disabilities, I requested the one entitled Rain Reign, about a girl with autism for my daughter. Even though it’s her brother who is autistic,I’m thinking she’ll really enjoy the book.

The book is mentioned, along with two others over at Disability Scoop, in the article entitled “Children’s Books Honored for Disability Storylines” by Michelle Diament. They all look good to me but what do I know, I’m just a librarian (and I play one in real life too)!
