Struggles

This is an excellent story on the struggles of a 19 year old with autism. The article is entitled “Mother Tells of Struggle for Adult Son with Autism to Gain College Placement” by Jo Worgan over at the Autism Daily Newscast. She simply wanted to share her story with others. Powerful story!

Sheltered Workshops

Recently I was introduced to the term Sheltered Workshops during a class for parents of children who have autism. As the father of a child who is beginning to see the end in regards of his education experience, this article hit especially close to home for me. It’s a term that I will probably become more familiar over time.

The article over at Disability Scoop is entitled “Feds Take Aim At Sheltered Workshops” by Michelle Diament. As someone who works for the federal government, it’s good to see.

On the brink

I have to say that this episode of the show Dateline as a single father was very hard to watch as it hits very close to home. My son is almost 16 years old, so we’re beginning to approach this part of his life. The episode is entitled On the Brink.

Neurotypical

Such a cool word! I have to say that I’ve never seen it before tonight. Neurotypical is the name of a small documentary by Adam Larsen that I saw on the PBS show POV: Documentaries with a Point of View. Since I only saw the last 15 minutes, I’ll try and find it through my local library.

As a side note, I came across another film entitled The United States of Autism by Richard Everts. I’ll look for this one too and keep you posted.
