Sharing the future

So tonight I just thought I would share the fact that I finally made an appointment for my son and I to go visit our local community college to check out their Automotive Technician program.

He’s been want to do this for a while now and so I finally e-mailed the head of the department to see if we could come by and check out what they have to offer. While we still have to figure out how he might get the tools he would need and how he will even get there if he does enroll, it’s one step at a time.

Next week, I’m going to a couple of workshops to begin to figure out how to begin to get him set up financially for the future. Like I said a minute ago, one step at a time.

Sometimes he says just the sweetest things

So the other day my son and I were watching television when an ad came on for some type of face time technology. I couldn’t tell you what brand it was even but he said to me that “if you got that dad, you could use it to talk to your friend in Greece”.

It came out of the blue. I hadn’t been talking about her that day but to me it was just the sweetest thing he could have said.

Sometimes it’s just hard

So tonight’s post is more about me than my son.  Maybe it’s just my age, as I’ve found myself thinking more about how one day I’m not going to be here to help him, which it turn has made it harder to get myself motivated to do what I need to do. That said, I know I just need to step it up and with a couple of workshops coming up next month, I’m hoping I can do just that.

I know that the more I get done, the better I’ll feel. So here’s hoping by next month, I’ll have a few more things taken care of. Like finding out if he’ll be able to drive, helping him try to find out if becoming a mechanic is a possibility and getting more of my financial stuff in order. That would definitely make it a bit easier for me and for him.

Common thread

Safe to say, everything on this list is something I have thought about or am thinking about as I write this post. That said, I agree that like James says, you can’t worry about it. You need to stay in the moment while planning for the future.

The article is entitled “10 Things Autism Parents Worry About” by James Hunt over at The Mighty. Now it’s time to go to bed because tomorrow I have more planning to do.

Physical education

As someone who has a degree in physical education, I thought this article hits on a really good idea. Helping others with disabilities while at the same time, getting physical activity.

After all, like myself, not all of us are athletes and what better way to get that physical activity while also feeling good about it. The article is entitled “This School Gives Students PE Credit For Doing Yard Work For The Elderly And People With Disabilities. It’s really a very simple concept and everybody wins.

Another place, same story

So reading this story is like reading my own story. Even though my son is older and we’re in a different place, that feeling is with me as well. Though lately it’s been a bit of rough sailing, I need to get to the place where I’ll know I’ve done what I can to help with some of those feelings.

The article tonight is entitled “I Parent a Child with a Disability, Here’s Why I can’t Die” by Charlie Beswick  over at The Mighty. Meanwhile, I’ll keep telling my story, one post at a time, just to remind my son.

Other than hobbies

So, reading this article was an interesting glimpse into what may a tiny part of my son’s life. It might also explains his interest perhaps in things like toy cars. He has lots of them throughout his room.

The article is entitled “The Necessity of Special Interests for Me as a Person on the Autism Spectrum” by Thøger Kari Hass  over at The Mighty. In fact, I think I need to read this again. Maybe even do a little more research.
