Girl with autism

This is an article I found over at Hello Giggles. In the world of autism, most of today’s reading is about boys and autism, so when I saw this article on girls and autism I felt it was important to share.

The article is entitled “How it Feels to Grow up When You’re a Girl with Autism” by Annika Hodges. It’s a topic that definitely needs more coverage.

Adam

So I watched the movie Adam, a young man with Asperger’s. The story line is about his relationship with a young lady named Beth. I must say at times it was hard to watch, wondering if my son will ever have a relationship. Anyway, I made it through and I must say, I’m glad I did. I think in a small way it gave me hope for my son.

Just one of those days

Today I don’t have a particular article to post just my thoughts. So my son graduated from high school this year and while he has a work/study program lined up for the next three years if necessary with the St. Louis Special School District, I have a lot to do.

I need to deposit some money into his new ABLE account, I need to get him over to a friend’s automobile shop to work on seeing if he’s interested in becoming a mechanic and at the same time, check out the local community colleges technician’s program. Then there’s the whole Supported Decision Making thing to look at and the list goes on….

With out vacation coming up, I need to try and get some of this done before we leave because once we get back, school for his siblings as well as his work/study program will be close to beginning. So much to do and so little time.

Special Olympics

This is as easy a post as I’ve ever written. Today I’m posting a video from the ESPY awards. Now I’m not big on awards but this one for Eunice Kennedy Shriver and the Special Olympics hits close to my heart.

The video is entitled “Michelle Obama Honors Eunice Kennedy Shriver at ESPYS 2017” over on YouTube. Ironically, it’s also one of my son’s favorite websites. Everytime I watch it I cry.

Mental health

As the father of an adult with special abilities, I feel I’ve become much more aware of those around me when I see like people. So when I read this about this CEO’s post on the issue of mental health with his employees, I thought I need to post it.

The article is entitled “It’s 2017 and Mental Health is Still an Issue in the Workplace” from the CEO Ben Congleton at the company Olark. So here’s hoping this way of thinking spreads.

Adam

So I recently came across what looks like an interesting movie entitled Adam about a young man with aspergers and a young lady he meets. While I’m not sure where my son is in regards to maybe one day having a relationship, perhaps it will even give me some insight into what is possible. It also looks like a cute movie.
